AT&T has purchased T-Mobile USA, it was announced today. The nations previous number two carrier in terms of subscribers now becomes the largest with an additional 34 million T-Mobile customers being added to AT&T’s total base. The deal is valued at $39 billion, of which $25 billion AT&T will be paying with cash. The deal also gives T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telecom an 8% stake in AT&T.
AT&T said in a statement that the joined networks will increase cell towers by about 30% which translates into better call quality for the consumers. Both AT&T and T-Mobile use the worldwide GSM frequencies in their network whereas Verizon and Sprint Nextel use America-only CDMA.
The deal has been approved by both boards but is still subject to review from regulators.
