The next version of the iPhone is said to be designed with Near Field Communications, or NFC technology. The new processor chips are going to be installed in the Apple iPhone 5 that will enable it do new things.
Apple foresees a future where your phone will replace your wallet and everything in it. NFC is already in the Samsung Galaxy S Nexus phone by Samsung, and the technology will see a surge in awareness and implementation in 2011 and going forward. NFC is a chip contained in the phone that transmits a small radio frequency a small distance, about 20 centimeters. The vision is to have NFC-enabled devices seamlessly communicate with one another instantly without any wires or wait time. Imagine going into the grocery store and just waving your phone at the checkout machine. Instantly, your credit card or bank account is charged and you are on your way.
NFC will allow you to sync your iPhone to your computer without the need to connect any wires. Just wave the phone near your hard drive and connect and manage your songs, photos, videos, or anything else between phone and computer. Now move out of your house and think about going to Las Vegas or a hotel somewhere on vacation. Currently you have to use a plastic card with a magnetic strip on the back to access your rooms and certain guest areas. Soon the phone will be able to download that hotel’s secure room app, and you now eliminate the need for all that plastic that usually discarded when the guests checkout and forget to return the cards to the front desk or take one home as a souvenir as I have done many times.
Security will be an issue if you trust your phone to store so much personal financial information on it. It may not be for everyone, but eventually you will see fingerprint technology as an extra precautionary measure to safeguard the data on the mobile device, as well as a remote wipe function like the one on most current Blackberry models.
Another early stage rumor for the iPhone 5 is that the physical home button will be completely removed. Apple Chief Steve Jobs has been said to have been opposed to the physical home button concept from the start. A potential concept would be to make the face of the new model completely flat and glass, eliminating the home button with a touch motion or gesture.
