Video Phone Pros and Cons

[ad_1]

These pros and cons should help you make a decision whether to buy a video phone and which one to buy. Clearly, the Pros out weigh the Cons. Video communication is here now and is the way of the future. It will be the choice of the majority of the world. This is a tsunami coming at us faster than you might think. Remember how quickly other high tech trends have happened.

Something to be aware of is that this is new technology. Like any other new technology, there will be wrinkles and issues. If it’s your intention to buy a video phone, then this list below is intended to help you avoid regret and disappointment. My goal with this article is to enlighten you on this new idea and also to ensure that you make the right choice of phone.

Cons:

  • If the internet goes down, connection is lost. Video phones work on voip (voice over internet protocol)
  • Most require a hard cable connection to internet – very few have WiFi capability.
  • 911 emergency calls require you to tell the operator the location of emergency
  • Picture quality can vary widely depending on model
  • Reliability of (connectivity) network you choose can vary dramatically (picture freezes)
  • Some models run at very low speed (frames per second), resulting in very poor video quality
  • Some models have very poor response time (lag time – not lip synchronized)

Pros:

  • See the person you are talking with.
  • Video communication is the way of the future
  • Creates vastly improved “presence”
  • Positive impact on relationships
  • True 3 way video conferencing capability – depending on model
  • Ability to leave “video messages” – depending on model
  • Does not require expensive equipment (computer, camera)
  • Digital versus analog. Everything is going digital.
  • Far cheaper than analog to make long distance calls – depending on calling plan
  • Does not require computer knowledge
  • Portable, carry with you, call from anywhere
  • Ease of set up. Just requires high speed internet connection
  • Ease of use – operates like ordinary phone
  • Replaces old analog telephone
  • Interfaces with existing cordless phones. No change to cordless phone operation
  • At least one model comes with Rotating Picture Frame
  • At least one model comes with WiFi capability
  • High definition picture (over 30 frames / second) – depending on model
  • Stereo sound – depending on model
  • Ability to interface with mobile video cell phones (iPhone) – depending on model
  • No interference with web browsing while video calling – depending on model
  • “Rolodex” memory – depending on model
  • Capability to interact with other video phones – depending on model

Some very important questions to ask.

  • Which video phone will be adopted as the norm for the future?
  • Which model will your relatives and friends adopt?
  • Which model is the easiest for everyone to use?
  • Does your phone plan support digital video telephony?
  • Is video communication the way of the future?
  • Does your video phone company own its own digital network.?
  • Is yours a reliable digital telephone service? -ie: loss of connection, picture, sound
  • Does your phone company have a license with the regulatory telecommunication authorities?
  • What is the customer service like?
